Hull's
award winning The Deep opened in March 2002. The building was designed by world
class architect, Sir Terry Farrell. The deep has exceeded all
expectations. With over two million paying customers and more than
twenty-thousand educational visits it has become one of Hull's most popular
destinations. The deep represents over £40m worth of investment and has provided
up to fifty jobs for local people.
Travel by the world's only underwater lift
through ten metres to Europe's deepest viewing tunnel. See several species
of shark including the most aggressive - the Grey Reef Shark. Witness huge marine
dinosaurs, Congor eels and much more including the new arrival of Europe's
first pair of green sawfish - a highly endangered species of shark.
The Deep has three thousand
animals in their collection made up of two-hundred and fifty species. There
are thirteen species of shark including three species of Ray. The largest
are the Sand Tiger Sharks.
A
new extension to the Deep is home to the world's largest twilight exhibition housing animals like Giant Japanese
Spider Crabs, Nautilus and Giant Pacific Octopus. The twilight part of the
name refers to the depths at which these animals live - an area which has
very little known about it.
